Being in the people business you learn quickly that people don’t usually tell you the truth when you ask them how they’re doing. Example: “How are you doing today?” You know the trained response… “Good!” We don’t even know why we say “good”, we just say it. We know that if we just asked the second or third question we will see that there is always more to that story, hence my point.
Today I learned of a person who asked a few extra questions and identified that a woman was having all kinds of problems with her teeth and was in dire need of seeing a dentist. Imagine that… the woman in need went from “doing great!” to “my teeth are killing me!” This conversation led to a trip to the dentist and this woman is on the way to toothache free living! It’s amazing what we can learn when we listen and ask good questions. Listening shows we care. I have heard it said we have two ears and one mouth, so perhaps our Lord is saying listen twice as much as we speak.
